The Neighborhood Needle-Threader: A Backyard Success Story

For many homeowners, adding a high-quality storage shed is the ultimate dream for organization. The only problem? Most suburban backyards weren’t designed with a “delivery lane” for a 12×16-foot structure.

Yesterday, we helped a local family turn a logistical nightmare into a seamless delivery. Here is how we used our Stiff-Boom Crane Truck to drop a custom-built garden shed over a two-story house and perfectly onto its foundation.

The Challenge: No Way In

The customer had a beautiful new shed ready for delivery, but their property presented a classic “impossible” scenario:

  • Fenced-In Yard: A 6-foot privacy fence surrounded the entire perimeter with no wide gate access.
  • Zero Side Clearance: Only 3 feet of space existed between the house and the property line—not nearly enough to “drive” a shed through.
  • The “Over-the-Top” Requirement: The only way into the backyard was over the roof of the garage.

The Execution: Total Precision

Lifting a shed is a unique challenge because, despite their size, sheds are relatively light and “wind-catchy.” If you aren’t careful, they can act like a giant sail.

  1. The Set-Up: We positioned our crane truck in the driveway, ensuring we had a clear vertical path away from the overhead power lines. We used leveling jacks to ensure the truck was 100% stable before the boom was extended.
  2. The Rigging: To prevent the shed from “folding” under the pressure of the straps, we used spreader bars. This kept the lifting straps vertical, pulling the shed straight up from its base rather than squeezing the roof.
  3. The “Blind” Drop: From his position in the driveway, our operator couldn’t see the backyard. Using a spotter with a two-way radio, we guided the shed over the roofline. With a slow, controlled descent, we lowered it onto the pre-poured gravel pad with less than an inch of deviation.

The Result

In under 60 minutes, the shed went from the trailer to its forever home. The homeowners were thrilled—they didn’t have to take down a single section of fence or worry about tire ruts ruining their manicured lawn.

Making the Impossible Look Easy

A lot of people think they have to settle for a “flat-pack” shed that they build themselves because their yard is inaccessible. Our crane truck services prove that if you have a clear view of the sky, we can get your project exactly where it needs to be.

“I watched from the patio as this massive shed just ‘floated’ over my roof and landed perfectly on the blocks. It was like watching a magic trick with a 2,000-lb prop.” — The Homeowner
